At Christmas time I was delighted to open the most amazing and thoughtful present from Ash – a spa afternoon. As someone who is on the go all the time, constantly checking my phone for updates and spending a lot of my time running from place to place, this couldn’t have come at a better time for me.
Life has been a little, well, hectic recently to say the least. So when Ash got me this voucher for a spa near to where we live, firstly, I thought hang on…since when did I mention this and he clearly DOES listen to me (even though 99.9% of the time I am banging on about useless life stuff) and secondly, he knew more than anyone I needed a bit of TLC, which is why it made it so thoughtful.
About the Spa
Emma Wilson Urban Spa is a reasonably new spa that opened in South London almost 2 years ago (in March) and prides itself in ‘combining the luxury of natural spa and beauty treatments set within a beautifully hand crafted urban spa’ (their words not mine). Emma herself started in the beauty industry more than 17 years ago learning various massage techniques through therapy and then moving onto specialist treatments including beauty. She has worked with high end spa brands such as; AVEDA and PINKS Boutique…to just name a few. Her spa offers treatments which include VOYA and Elemis, two brands which I have heard a lot about and now love.
The main thing that caught my eye were the other members of staff working there, the girls were friendly, chatty and did everything to suit your needs…more on this later, so read on!
So before I decided to go, I went online and looked at their extremely long list of treatments. It amazed me at how many treatments you can have. Pricing wise it isn’t cheap but please let me tell you now, THIS IS NOT some tacky back end massage parlour. This spa is an award winning, rustic, beautifully designed spa. You only have to go outside the shop front and see that the sign is beautifully covered in succulents (a blogger’s dream). So don’t go in thinking you’ll get a cheap, quick and half hearted massage for £20. Massages, for example, are usually around £60 for a therapist and £80 for a senior therapist. However, I chose the normal therapist option for a 60 minute full body, Swedish, deep tissue, hot oil massage. Since I do a lot of exercise and run around from my job all day, I thought this would be the best option for me, but there is so much to choose from. I highly recommend you choose what is best for you and your own needs!
I also decided it was about time I had my shellac re done on my nails. My poor nails had been rejected since November, and it was high time I got them re-done, and not just me painting a coat of paint on them at home. I booked my treatments quick and easy with their online booking system via their website back in December and decided I would do it for the weekend me and Ash had planned to go to Brighton for our 5 years together (blog post coming on that soon!). So here, I am, an hour after having been into this spa for the first time and writing this post, because I just HAD to tell you of my experience there.
As soon as I entered the spa, I noticed how beautifully designed it was; rustic tables, stools and elegant chairs. It was really clean and tidy with terrariums and succulents everywhere to set the relaxation mood. The music was calm and tranquil and I was immediately invited to sit down and offered a cup of tea or a glass of water. When it was time for my first treatment (the massage) I was taken downstairs to a cute pokey room with a gorgeous bed and lots of treatments with a shower in the corner. I was pleasantly surprised by the aroma that filled the room by the VOYA diffuser’s. Louise (one of the therapists) first of all asked me how much pressure she should use and I told her my requirements (medium, focus on shoulders as a lot of tension) and she left the room whilst I undressed, and got onto the ever so comfy massage bed. The 60 minute massage went to quickly. I dozed in and out of sleep whilst she massaged every single part of my body. She used warm, VOYA and Elemis oils to massage my skin which made it feel silky smooth once she had finished. I felt very relaxed and sleepy afterwards and I was really impressed with the first treatment I had received.
After she had finished, I got dressed and made my way back upstairs where there was a lovely hot peppermint herbal tea waiting for me – it’s always advised you drink lots of water or herbal teas after a massage, as it can release toxins which can make you dehydrated! I sipped my tea in one of the comfy grey chairs whilst I waited for my next treatment – shellac.
I chose my colour – I went for OPI ‘getting nada on my honeymoon’ firstly because the name made me laugh but secondly because it was my all time favourite colour – a barbie bubblegum pink!
Dulce was the therapist for my next treatment and she was friendly, chatty and very interested in having a friendly conversation. She prepped my nails and cuticles and told me I need to moisturise more – which we all know I am extremely lazy at (whoopsy!) She used the UV lamp to set my chosen colour and finished my nail treatment off with some cuticle oil. I thanked her and promised I would moisturise more to prevent my cuticles from splitting and becoming dry – apologies to Dulce for having to deal with my disgusting nails!
Afterwards I was told to take my time and relax so I had another peppermint tea (to revive) before leaving when I felt ready. The nicest thing about this whole experience was that I didn’t feel rushed in and out and treated as ‘another client’. I was treated really well and was kept relaxed and comfortable throughout my whole experience.
I throughly enjoyed my time at Emma Wilson’s Urban Spa and encourage anyone who is in the area to pay them a visit if you feel like you could do with a bit of pampering. There is a simple booking system online or you can call for more information. They are open 7 days a week which make it a lot easier for those who don’t have time during the week (due to work) and just need a little down time at the weekends.
